If you’re in Washington Park on Veterans Day, take time to stop by one or both of the two monuments to Albany’s military veterans in the Park.

henry_johnsonErected in 1991, the Henry Johnson Monument (near the Madison Avenue/Willett Street entrance) honors the Albany native who performed heroically in the first African American unit of the U.S. Army to engage in combat in World War I.

Albany-Civil-War-Soldiers-and-Sailors-Monument-in-Washington-ParkDedicated in 1912, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (at the State Street/Henry Johnson Blvd entrance) was created to memorialize Civil War soldiers from the Albany area.
