If you’re in Washington Park on Veterans Day, take time to stop by one or both of the two monuments to Albany’s military veterans in the Park.
Erected in 1991, the Henry Johnson Monument (near the Madison Avenue/Willett Street entrance) honors the Albany native who performed heroically in the first African American unit of the U.S. Army to engage in combat in World War I.
Dedicated in 1912, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument (at the State Street/Henry Johnson Blvd entrance) was created to memorialize Civil War soldiers from the Albany area.
